Toxic Productivity

An overworked woman

Author: Michelle Mamerto

Do you find yourself needing to be busy, and productive at all times; neglecting medical appointments, skipping or always running late to your child’s school events in order to push a little bit further at work or get more things done? Do you find yourself checking work emails on the weekends when you are supposed to be off; taking work calls during dinner, or even worse- during vacation? Is it difficult for you to sit on the couch and watch a show, when there are so many things to check off your to do list? Toxic productivity is the need to feel productive all the time. It’s an uncontrollable urge, and it can be dangerous to your physical and mental health.

Here are a few signs that you are in a cycle of toxic productivity:

  • Do you frequently take lunch at your desk?

  • Are you abandoning hobbies and things you love to do?

  • Have you stopped prioritizing rest and your health?

  • Do you feel anxious and exhausted?

  • Do you struggle with idleness, and are constantly thinking about work?

Toxic productivity can be tough to recognize and manage- especially in individuals with high standards, but it’s something we must pay close attention to, so as not to burn out, or destroy one’s mental and physical health. In order to break the cycle of toxic productivity, keep track of how much sleep you are getting- make sure you are getting enough, and take your work breaks and lunches- engage your senses. Take a walk and notice the beauty around you. Listen to music, hit the gym, eat something delicious, see your friends, meditate, and don’t neglect your medical, dental, and mental health appointments.

You will find that you that giving yourself time to relax can have a positive effect on your work. Most of us want to do well, and when we love our work, or have a big goal, we don’t want to stop. When you start to feel an imbalance, and work becomes the only thing, it’s time to take care- and take a break.
