I may be biased when it comes to temporary work, after all, I’m a Temporary Recruiter, but I see the benefits first hand every day. Temping is a great way to explore different industries, earn money while attending school, gain valuable training, make new connections, and even discover a new job or career path.
Explore Different Companies and Industries
As a temp, you get the chance to experience the inner workings of different companies and industries. You’ll see how organizations are structured, what they value in their employees, and what types of skills and experience are most in demand—insight that can help you rise to the top in your chosen field.
Flexibility
One of the biggest perks of temping is how well it works with your schedule. Sure, you might get a call from your staffing agency on a day you're unavailable—but if you're truly not free, you won't be sent out. At The Job Shop, we have temps who are students, temps who work full-time and only want weekend shifts, and others who are saving money for travel or school expenses and are open to extra shifts. We also work with people who have full-time availability, and those who can only work overnight. A flexible schedule is one of the key benefits of temporary work.
Learn New Skill
You can also learn new skills as a temp. We have candidates studying for careers in healthcare who take on concierge roles with us. These jobs not only help them pay for their education but also provide valuable experience in hospitality and customer service. What’s great is that many of our candidates, while earning degrees and certifications, can add real work experience to their resumes. Whether it’s learning a new database, juggling multiple tasks, or handling customers, many of these skills will prove useful in future roles.
Find the Right Fit
Another common outcome we see? Temps who love their job and get hired on directly by the client. Temping is a fantastic way to see if a job, or company,is the right fit for you. You'll have the chance to meet potential coworkers, supervisors, and clients, and get a feel for the company culture to decide whether it suits you long-term.
Network
And let’s not forget the people you meet along the way. Making new acquaintances and expanding your network is another great perk of temping.
From picking your own schedule, exploring new environments, learning about different roles, building new connections, to landing a full-time job, there are so many advantages to being a temporary employee.
