Many San Franciscans affectionately know the Alemany Certified Farmers’ Market as “the people’s market”. This down-home moniker speaks to Alemany’s affordable prices and bustling community atmosphere, but most of all to its long history in the City and the consistent public support that has enjoyed. The Alemany Farmers’ Market was founded in San Francisco on August 12, 1943. It was the first farmers’ market in California. The Victory Garden Council and regional farmers initially established a farmers’ market at Duboce Avenue and Market Street as a wartime measure to provide an outlet for surplus and distressed crops from neighboring counties. On August 4, 1947, the market moved to its present 100 Alemany Boulevard location where it still operates rain or shine, every Saturday of the year. We are fortunate to have this permanent home at the crux of many vibrant San Francisco neighborhoods, as well as permanent facilities for vendors and shoppers to enjoy. Our colorful stalls and free parking are only a few of many features that distinguish Alemany from other markets in the City. It is the only City-run farmers’ market in San Francisco. The Real Estate Division has the responsibility for market operations. Today the Alemany Farmers’ Market is one of 520 certified farmers’ markets in the State according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), and the number is growing every year! As the “granddaddy” of California farmers’ markets, we can thank Alemany for the instrumental role it has played in spurring on a spirited farmers’ market movement in California and in connecting urban consumers with our rural neighbors for over 60 years. Over the years, the Alemany Farmers’ Market has continuously supported the small, family farmers of California. When the market was founded in 1943, San Francisco was full of Victory Gardens and the ethic of “eating local” was commonplace out of necessity. Now the “buy fresh, buy local” ethic has a renewed importance for consumers facing climate change, rising food prices, and diet-related health problems. Farmers’ markets are thriving in this new “green” economy to the benefit of consumers who have an opportunity to enjoy fresh produce, meet farmers, and learn more about their food supply. At the Alemany Farmers’ Market, we are lucky to have farming families who have been selling here for two or even three generations. It is this type of dedication and mutual support from farmers and the community that makes Alemany “the people’s market.” The Alemany Farmers' Market is open every Saturday from dawn to dusk.

The most in-depth examination of the artist’s work in over two decades, Diego Rivera’s America brings together more than 150 of Rivera’s paintings, frescoes, and drawings—as well as three galleries devoted to large-scale film projections of highly influential murals he created in Mexico and the United States. Rather than surveying his entire career, the exhibition focuses on Rivera’s work from the 1920s to the mid-1940s, when he was conceiving a new vision for North America informed by his travels in Mexico and the U.S.
Ten thematic galleries are dedicated to places like Tehuantepec and Manhattan that captured his imagination, and to his favorite subjects, such as street markets, popular celebrations, and images of labor and industry.
“Rivera was one of the most aesthetically, socially and politically ambitious artists of the 20th century,” notes guest curator James Oles. “He was deeply concerned with transforming society and shaping identity—Mexican identity, of course, but also American identity, in the broadest sense of the term. Because of his utopian belief in the power of art to change the world, Rivera is an essential artist to explore anew today, from a contemporary perspective.”
Diego Rivera’s America builds on SFMOMA’s collection of over 70 works by Rivera, one of the largest in the world. It also features paintings, drawings and frescoes borrowed from public and private collections in Mexico, the U.S. and the U.K., reuniting many for the first time since the artist’s death. Iconic and much-loved works, such as The Corn Grinder (1926), Dance in Tehuantepec (1928), Flower Carrier (1935) and Portrait of Lupe Marín (1938), will be shown alongside paintings that have not been seen publicly since leaving the artist’s studio.

Let’s roll! Whether you are new to roller skating or a skating pro, San FranDISCO offers a fun skating atmosphere for everyone!
The rink is located at Fulton Plaza (next to the Main Library) and features both the traditional roller rink flooring and a roof to keep the fog and sun off your stylish moves! Open to the public as of Saturday, October 15, 2022; hours are Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 8pm, through the end of the year.
With good tunes spinning all day long and illuminated skates at night — come get your groove on and dance to the beat of music. This rink is for everyone: from the young to the young-at-heart — in the Heart of the City! And grab a bite at an area restaurant after you skate!
A project of San Francisco's notorious "Church of 8 Wheels," San FranDISCO offers 90 minute skating sessions 3x per day starting on even hours: noon-1:30pm, 2-3:30pm and 4-5:30pm and one 120-minute session: 6-8pm.
*The rink is also available for Private Parties on days outside of the regular schedule.
TICKETS are $15 for adults (18 and up) and $5 for youth.
