There is a lot going on right now and all the job search tips still apply but you will need to dig a little deeper. To start you need to make sure you have the basics down.
Basics
Make sure you have a proper email address. There are a lot of job seekers that will use two email addresses. One for job hunting and one for personal. We see too many times the candidates get calls from employers and their voicemail is full. I know today we rely heavily on texting, but employers will first reach out with an email or a phone call.
Resume
Tailor your resume for each position you apply to. (Read the job description and make sure you highlight your skill set for the position.) You want to make yourself a “Smack-in-the-forehead” Obvious Fit
Sit Down and Make a Plan
Where do you want to work? Do you want to commute? What are the top companies you want to work for? What are the backup companies? Do not forget the smaller companies. Keep a spreadsheet of the companies you have applied to, networking opportunities, follow up activity and the companies you have researched.
Start Networking
It may seem a bit odd with this tip, but you do not have to just network in person. People have a lot of time right now and the current mindset is to help. Write down the people you know and start reaching out. Call them or email them to see if they have a few minutes to talk about you job search and to see who they may be able to connect you to.
Make Sure You Have a LinkedIn Profile
Now is the time to take the time to set up a solid profile and start networking. Set a goal for yourself to spend at least 1 hour a day making connections.
Keep Building Your Resume
There are many volunteer opportunities that would love to have your skill set. You can volunteer from home; you can volunteer each week, or you can volunteer one time a year. (Please do keep in mind you never know who you will be volunteering with or know who you may meet.) Every opportunity is an opportunity to network.
Make Sure You Take the Time to Drop a Thank You
Make sure you get the contact information of all the people you interview with. Craft original thank you notes the moment you get back to your computer. Send the note right away after the interview; make sure you ask for next steps or ask for the job. Dropping a handwritten note in the mail will make a Huge impact.
Always Stay Positive
It truly helps to have a positive attitude with your job search, and this will come across in your job networking and when you interview. Plug along and before you know it; you will land your new career.
