Job Search Balance

A business person balancing

Balancing a job search with the rest of your life can be a challenge. Here are some tips for finding balance in your search.

Create Your Network Of Support.

Surround yourself with professional contacts, mentors, and supporters. After a day of searching and interviewing, it may be hard to keep in mind that setbacks are temporary. A professional contact or former colleague can offer empathy, remind you of your strengths, and offer perspective. You could even create a job search group amongst contacts in similar situations to maintain momentum.

Separate Your Search Into Distinct Phases And Set Parameters With Each Search.

Achieving small milestones in your job search on a daily or weekly basis can instill a sense of accomplishment.  A career counselor can provide guidance on what this might look like for you. Committing to regular, scheduled time for job searching each week can lead to consistent progress.  At the same time, it is important to set boundaries on the daily time invested in job searching, understanding that it does not necessitate a traditional 9-5-time commitment.

Acknowledge And Value The Work You’re Putting In.

Tracking your progress through a journal, notes, or calendar can help you recognize your accomplishments and stay motivated. Every action, such as conducting career research, reaching out to colleagues, or updating your resume, brings you closer to your goal. Use this record to evaluate your progress, pinpoint areas for growth, and outline your next steps in the career search process.

Take Breaks

Effective job searching requires balance.  Scheduled breaks and pursue enjoyable, social, or creative activities that help you unwind. Evidence suggests that taking breaks can increase productivity. Moreover, prioritize self-care by getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly to maintain your energy levels.

Understand That The Search Process Is Unique To Each Individual.

Your search will be distinct from others. Refrain from comparing your progress to anyone else’s achievements. Remember your search is not a reflection of your worth. Instead, it is about discovering a place where your unique strengths and contributions will be valued.
