Interview Mistake Retrospective

In 2025 some of the interview mistakes have been….

  • Taking your shoes off during the interview.

  • Charging your phone.

  • Texting during the interview.

  • Taking a call during the interview.

  • Not coming prepared.

  • Not being able to articulate why you should be hired.

  • Showing up for the interview late.

  • Talking negatively about your previous employer.

One of the most important interview don’ts is arriving unprepared. Failing to research the company, understand the job description, or anticipate common interview questions can signal a lack of interest or motivation. Candidates who cannot explain why they want the role or how their skills align with the organization may appear disengaged. Preparation demonstrates professionalism, confidence, and respect for the interviewer’s time, while unpreparedness can quickly end consideration for the position.

Another major interview don’t is displaying unprofessional behavior, whether through body language, attire, or communication style. Dressing too casually, checking your phone, interrupting the interviewer, or speaking negatively about past employers can leave a lasting negative impression. Employers look for candidates who show maturity, courtesy, and emotional intelligence. Even strong qualifications can be overshadowed by poor manners or a negative attitude during the interview.

Finally, candidates should avoid oversharing or providing vague, unfocused answers. Talking too much about personal issues, unrelated experiences, or failing to clearly articulate accomplishments can confuse interviewers and weaken your message. Similarly, giving one-word or overly generic responses may suggest a lack of enthusiasm or self-awareness. Effective interviews strike a balance—being concise, relevant, and thoughtful while clearly demonstrating value and interest in the role.
