Weekend Planner: May 20

Every Friday we put together a list of the weekend events we think look most interesting and provide them here. Keep in mind there is always a lot more going on, and all it takes is a little digging to find something that will be the perfect activity for you.
Click on any of the event titles for a link to the event.
Friday, May 20

American Steel Studios, Oakland

Curious about what art projects are coming to Burning Man? For May we’ll have 10 artists present their planned works, while on the big screen behind them slides and movies of their art will appear. There will be a variety of projects, both colossus and small, each so mind blowing that you’ll want to participate in their creation…which you can! All art pieces presented will offer opportunities for you to get involved.
From the mystery of the The Last Apothecary to the HUMONGOUS Catacomb of Veils, this will be an evening of awe and inspiration!
East Bay Burners Social: Friday, 20 May 7:00pm – 10:00pm American Steel Studios – Love Potion Collective 1960 Mandela Pkwy, Oakland, CA 94607 Parking & Entry on 20th Street
The monthly East Bay Burner Socials (January – September) are an opportunity for the Burning Man community to gather on an ongoing basis. Each Social includes at least one speaker of interest and lots of opportunities to see familiar faces, meet new people and learn new things.
We usually get between 80-170 new and veteran Burners with a liberal scattering of the Burner-curious.
The event begins as a social mingle followed by an hour or so of presentations, then more mingling until folks leave. Usually there is a nearby bar that the adults visit to carry on the schmoozing.
The East Bay Burner Socials are family friendly (kids welcome!) wheelchair accessible, and to facilitate discourse, don’t have loud music.
See you there!

Constructed, instead? comes from an inner conversation with Susan Sontag’s essay Against Interpretation, in which she dives into what constitutes artistic style and idiosyncratic aesthetics. The question of style –inherent or not- has been raised often but it continues firmly and obstinately in spite of its opponents. With the notion of style, comes the question of whether it is secreted or constructed, and whether this can be distinguished at all.
This exhibition engages in this dilemma whilst highlighting constructed spaces, innuendos of depth and scale, and nonsensical narrative. Through the use of synthetic materials, magic and irony, Constructed, instead? brings artists who live and work in the Bay Area in dialogue about a sense of belonging in liminal spaces, imaginary realms and visual inquiries.
“What is inevitable in a work of art is the style. To the extent that a work seems right, just, unimaginable otherwise (without loss or damage), what we are responding to is a quality of its style. The most attractive works of art are those which give us the illusion the artist had no alternatives… the greatest art seems secreted, not constructed” (Susan Sontag, Against Interpretation)
Please join us for the opening of Constructed, instead? On Friday, May 20th 7-9pm at Residence/SF.

Lots of hype about the new contemporary art museum. Let’s see for ourselves. We start with a private architecture and overview tour, and then choose individually which exhibits to view in detail. We’ll meet at the new Howard Street entrance.
Afterward we’ll rendez-vous to picnic together at Cafe 5 Sculpture Garden on the fifth floor, or if too crowded, in the Yerba Buena Gardens/Metreon food court to share our impressions. Those who attend the tour are expected to stay for our luncheon discussion/wine tasting optional. I’ll send out a few online items art and museums to enhance our dialogue.
