Oakland First Fridays is an immersive art and community experience on the first Friday of each month on Telegraph Avenue from West Grand to 27th Street.
Every First Friday from 5–9:30 pm, Oakland’s KONO district (Koreatown Northgate) springs to life with galleries, artist collectives, street artists, local culinary artisans, performers, musicians, dancers, DJs, and poets gathering for Oakland First Friday events.
Thousands of people come from across the Bay Area and beyond to see and experience art, be inspired, eat great food, enjoy live music, and stroll through the amazing, eclectic city of Oakland.
One of the cultural partners of Oakland First Fridays is Oakland Art Murmur, a collection of galleries and mixed-use venues many of which are open First Friday evenings. The range of artistic exhibitions is inspiring.
Most of the venues are open from 6–9 pm. Many of the galleries are adjacent to the Telegraph Avenue site of Oakland First Fridays on 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th Streets going east toward the hills.
Directions to Oakland First Fridays Parking is a breeze! Here is a list of parking garages in the area. There are limited parking meters on side streets along Telegraph Ave. Make sure to bring quarters! Feeling lazy? Take BART to 19th Street and stroll a few blocks down to 23rd Street and Telegraph Ave.
When we think about Independence Day what usually comes to mind is freedom, but we rarely talk about the formation of something new. Banding together, the United States was a do-it-yourself movement. You can be free, but what are you doing with your freedom? As we reflect on independence this month, we are reminded of all the artists who make works from scratch, highlighting those who do-it-themselves.

Stop, Drop and Sketch

Learn how to fit a sketching practice into your daily routine, using dynamic, gestural line and loose, fluid color. We’ll go over ways to capture the essence of fleeting moments in just a few minutes each, while walking the streets of the city. A kit with all materials — watercolor set, sketchbook, pen, waterbrush — is included in the class fee (a $40 value).
We’ll cover how to:
> Use shape and design to choose a subject quickly > Use the fewest, most dynamic lines to capture a scene > Take advantage of texture to get a sense of place > Record the right kind of notes to finish a sketch later when in a rush > Splash watercolor loosely and use a “rainbow” approach to add sparkle to the sketch
After several exercises designed to build decisiveness and speed, we’ll share our sketches and see how different (or similar) everyone’s rapid captures turn out to be.

For the first time ever, the 17th Annual Monterey Beer Festival will include an educational display about cannabis from Presenting Sponsor Big Sur Canna+Botanicals. Although no cannabis samples will be allowed on site, attendees will enjoy learning more about cannabis at the booth. The Watsonville Buying Center will also have cars on display.
Locals and Visitors can take a fun “beer-cation” and celebrate the 4th of July weekend at the 17th Annual Monterey Beer Festival, returning to the beautiful Monterey County Fair & Event Center on Saturday, July 7th. Bring your friends, spouse, significant other, cousins or just make some new friends at this friendly fun festival! A not-to-be-missed event for anyone 21 and over, the Monterey Beer Festival benefits the Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation (a 501c3 non-profit organization – Tax ID #77-0402426).

The Roxie Theater, a San Francisco landmark in the Mission District, brings people together to meet and connect through distinctive cinematic experiences. San Francisco’s favorite family picnic is back for 2018. Presidio Picnic brings together the best of the Bay Area food scene with the beauty of this national park site and views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Held on the seven acre Main Parade Ground lawn, this weekly community event features food and drink from more than 25 local vendors, food trucks & pop-ups.
But it’s not just about the grub; visitors can enjoy an ever-changing array of free activities including yoga classes, lawn games, a Presidio photo booth, free kids bike-riding lessons from the Presidio YMCA, and nature-based arts and crafts for kids in the Presidio Adventure Zone tent.
New for 2018 is a series of monthly cultural performances.
