200 Years of Chinatowns: Alfred Twu Art Show

Join Alfred Twu in his latest exhibit that will showcase in acrylic paintings the past, present, and future of California Chinatowns.
This is a story of two centuries of California Chinatowns. From the mining camps of the Gold Rush to the urban neighborhoods of the late 1800s, to the suburban strip malls of the present day, to the yet to be built neighborhoods of the next few decades. Throughout it all, these vibrant communities have been, and continue to be, immigrant gateways, economic engines, social hubs, political bases, and heritage sites.
Past.
200 Years of California Chinatowns begins with lesser-known parts of Chinese-American history. Starting from rural communities in Marysville and Locke, the story continues through to Chinese-American contributions to the Bay Area’s numerous political movements.
Present.
Next, the artwork will look at today’s Chinatowns. Whether they are historic ones such as San Francisco, new suburbs in the South Bay or San Gabriel Valley, or emerging areas in college towns like Berkeley, today’s Chinatown reflects a shift from forced isolation to becoming part of the national fabric. Today’s Chinese-American could be a newcomer, could be third generation, could be mixed ethnicity. Likewise, no longer exclusively Chinese, the Chinatown of today is sometimes pan-Asian, sometimes fully international, sometimes as American as fortune cookies, and sometimes all of the above.
Future.
The third part will look at Chinatowns of the future. As urban living continues to grow in popularity, what better model to look at than the dense, lively urban Chinatowns – or perhaps, their younger cousin – the clusters of Chinese businesses in college towns. It was in one of these college town Chinatowns – Durant Avenue in Berkeley – that I had my first Chinatown experienced. Here was a place where I might have a milk tea with pizza or grab a lunch of avocado and rice. I’d hang out with Chinese friends, but with a mix of Cantonese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English speakers, when we were together, we’d all talk in English.
In the 21st century, it’s no longer a choice of isolation or assimilation into the mainstream Rather, there’s a choice of worlds to go between. As we look at the future of Chinatowns, let’s honor the past, reflect on today, and make plans for tomorrow!

A portion of the proceeds will go to support SF Bay Area Renters’ Federation. SF Bay Area Renters’ Federation is the increase capacity arm of the anti-displacement movement. They support the construction of high density housing in all SF neighborhoods. SF is a successful, growing city. We are proud that people from all over the world want to live here. To ensure current residents can continue to afford to live here, we need to build as much new housing as possible.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
All ages welcome. State issued drivers license required for beer tasting tickets.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
We are located on the corner of 7th and Phelan, in San Jose. There are lots of public and private options, but we recommend Lyft.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?
You may not bring and will be kicked out if you bring the following:

SOS Seafood Festival: Sustaining Our Seas will be held Saturday, January 30 (rain or shine) from 10 am to 5 pm in the vast outdoor lots surrounding Half Moon Bay Brewing Company overlooking picturesque Pillar Point Harbor in Princeton-By-The-Sea, the historic and funky fishing hamlet 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay.

The festival includes food trucks and booths from the fantastic Google Food team, Off The Grid, Sam’s Chowder House, Seville Tapas and Ultimate Souvlaki serving fabulous fresh, sustainable seafood and other incredible edibles in SOS Food Truck City, and colorful SOS Beverage Bistros sprinkled throughout the event will feature a variety of local award-winning wines from Barterra Winery and Half Moon Bay Winery, world-class small batch craft beers from Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, South City Hard Cider and unique SOS specialty cocktails from Half Moon Bay Distillery.

The world-renowned Earth Circus will wow festivalgoers with a stunning repertoire of high-quality, artistic entertainment from the mesmerizing to the thrilling…amazing stilters, fascinating acrobats and jugglers, plus unique facepainting for kids.
Across the street, in the “Field of Dreams” lot overlooking the harbor, is the free-admission Fin-Tastic Funzone with an array of awesome attractions for kids including a high-flying zip-line, super-thrilling bungee jump, wild and wacky waterballerz, challenging rock climbing wall, performers from the inimitable Sardine Family Circus plus food trucks and booths offering family-friendly food, fun and games.
Organizers of the Half Moon Bay Crab Fest recast their 2016 event as the SOS Seafood Festival as a result of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s emergency ruling to delay the opening of the commercial crab season due to high levels of domoic acid and all the uncertainty surrounding the season.
SOS is the international Morse code distress signal being highlighted in our event name to call attention to the current state of ocean life and our need to address and remedy it.

Age 20 and under receive free admission but each person age 20 and under must be accompanied by an adult ticket holder (on the Brewing Company side of the event).
Admission is free for all across the street in the Fin-Tastic Funzone.
Limited vehicle and bicycle parking are available in the large lot directly across the street from the event.
Pets are not allowed on the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company side of the event.
The festival will take place rain or shine.

In a break from tradition, Super Bowl City will be open for an extra weekend this year, providing local residents the opportunity to experience the excitement of Super Bowl 50 before out-of-town guests arrive. Super Bowl City will open Saturday, January 30, with the day’s activities topped off with the Host Committee’s “Saturday Night Lights” celebration: the official re-lighting of the iconic Bay Lights on the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bay Bridge, followed by the Macy’s Fireworks Show and a performance by the Bay Area’s own Chris Isaak. Prior to Isaak’s performance, Sean Hayes will perform on the City Stage.
Super Bowl City’s second stage, the Fan Stage, will feature performances all day, from 11AM-10PM, including a pep rally with the Gilroy High School Marching Band, a San Francisco 49ers “Gold Rush” and more.
Located in the Sue Bierman Park area of Super Bowl City, The City Stage presented by Levi’s® is being produced in conjunction with LiveNation, and was designed to showcase a wide variety of free live musical, cultural and performing arts entertainers throughout Super Bowl Week.
Located in Justin Herman Plaza within Super Bowl City, the Fan Stage is being produced in conjunction with e2k events and will be the “live” area of the Fan Energy Zone, serving as a presentation space for community partners, celebrity appearances and photo opportunities, and the main space for the DJs and MCs.

Go out for dinner and find yourself smack dab in the middle of a comic murder investigation at this interactive show. In this improvisational event, the audience gets to do the detective work in a hilariously twisted case of homicide. Watch the action carefully to ferret out hidden evidence as you enjoy dinner and drinks purchased from the full restaurant and bar. At the evening’s end it will be up to you to solve the case and figure out “whodunnit.” It’s the perfect mix of comedy, improvisational theater and mystery for an evening out that entertains your mind and your sense of humor. **
