The Castro Theater, San Francisco

7:20PM, All Ages

7:20pm ROCKY IV (1985) – 30th Anniversary 35mm Screening! Written & Directed by Sylvester Stallone Containing: Sly, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Brigitte Nielsen, Dolph Lundgren & James Brown

Come celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Sylvester Stallone’s fist-pounding, adrenaline-pumping, Cold War tour-de-force. Profoundly patriotic, this ultimate sports spectacle of the 1980s gave Swedish martial artist Dolph Lungren, the role of a lifetime (which some audiences have argued is much more complicated than critics initially dismissed), while Stallone proved that he could truly “push it to the limit” with some of the greatest training montages in cinema history. Be prepared to be dancing in the aisles with James Brown’s decade defining theme song, while we celebrate both musician Bill Conti (4.13) (whose franchise score is oddly not used in this entry) and cinematographer Bill Butler’s birthday (4.07)! This is your chance to experience a neo-sincere screening in all of its glory. Newly Struck 35mm Print courtesy of Park Circus. 91 minutes. RATED R. Preceded by an onslaught of other 1980s Cold War movie trailers.

9:30pm THE ROCK (1996) Directed by Michael Bay; Written by David Weisberg, Douglas S. Cook w/ Ghost Writing by Quentin Tarantino and Aaron Sorkin Containing: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, David Morse, William Forsythe, Michael Biehn and Tony Todd

It’s time to jump off the cheap bandwagon of dismissing Michael Bay. Following in the epic foosteps of D.W. Griffith, William Wyler and Robert Aldrich, Michael Bay has defined the modern Action Blockbuster (alongside James Cameron and Jerry Bruckheimer) for two decades now and its time to stop pretending he isn’t great at what he does. After single handedly turning Will Smith into an action star with his debut feature BAD BOYS (1995), Bay delivered his most beloved film, THE ROCK. With pitch perfect performances by both Sean Connery and the always lovable Nicolas Cage, this dazzling Bay Area extravaganza will have you screaming with delight as its over-the-top sequences will prove his sheer brilliance at the greatest movie theatre in the United States. Leave your SOUTH PARK snarkiness at home and let yourself enjoy a good ol’ fashioned slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am. Those still skeptical, perhaps knowing that both Quentin Tarantino and Aaron Sorkin ghost wrote scenes for the script will make you think twice. Widescreen 35mm print courtesy of Disney Studios. 136 minutes. RATED R. Preceded by trailers for other modern action spectacles unfairly dismissed by Wes Anderson fans.

DDBS

Phoenix Theater, San Francisco

8PM, All ages

$30

Set in a rundown bar in the Bronx, two of society’s rejects, Danny, a brooding, self-loathing young man who resorts more to violence than reason, and Roberta, a divorced, guilt-ridden young woman whose troubled teenage son is now being cared for by her parents, strike up a conversation over a beer. Danny, whose fellow truck drivers call him “the beast,” seems incapable of tender emotion, while Roberta, who is still haunted by the memory of an ugly sexual incident involving her father, is distrustful of men in general. As their initial reserve begins to melt,  they decide to spend the night together and the possibility of a genuine and meaningful relationship begins to emerge—the first for both of them. In the end, both characters find hope for a future touched with less bitterness and loneliness than they had imagined before their fateful meeting.

“…the play is the equivalent of sitting at ringside watching a prize fight that concludes in a loving embrace.” —NY Times. ”
