Space exploration is experiencing a renaissance in the Bay Area and “Space Innovation Days”, May 8th-9th, 2015 at the Palace of Fine Arts, is an opportunity to meet the local entrepreneurs and technologists who are making this happen.

“From when I started in 1995 until 2005 or 2006, I didn’t see anything that looked even worth a first meeting. Now it’s very different — there are a whole bunch of them.” — Steve Jurvetson, Bay Area Venture Capitalist in Fortune Magazine (April 28 2014)

Dates/Times: Friday, May 8, 2015, 5 pm – 8 pm — Kick-off and wine-tasting

Saturday, May 9, 2015, 9 am – 5 pm — the Space Entrepreneurs

Location: The San Francisco Innovation Hangar

3301 Lyon Street

Palace of Fine Arts Exhibition Hall

San Francisco, CA 94123

The New Space Industry In the first half of the 20th century, space was once the domain of theorists and experimentalists as well as tinkerers and entrepreneurs who believed that space travel is possible. In a race for national prestige and security, spaceflight suddenly became the domain of large companies and governments.

Today’s entrepreneurial pioneers stand on the shoulders of individuals like Goddard, von Braun, Tsiolkovsky, and others. They are also armed with new technologies such as the mobile devices, cloud computing, and additive manufacturing which did not exist a decade or more ago.

Co-organized by the Silicon Valley Space Center (SVSC) and the Innovation Hangar, “Space Innovation Days” will occur May 8-9 (Fri-Sat), at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts. It is a chance to meet some of the Bay area’s new space entrepreneurs and technologists. Frankly, this really is rocket science.

Meet the Innovators The two-day event kicks off on Friday evening with an overview of participating groups, and a wine tasting sponsored by Urthecast. The event will include announcements by the Space Frontier Foundation and overview of its New Space 2015 Conference, to be held July 16-18 in Silicon Valley. SVSC will introduce the event’s participating companies and educational institutions that will speak more on Saturday. All this will be accompanied by Urthecast images from the International Space Station.

Saturday’s activities will provide a chance to interact with participating groups in more detail. Each group will give a brief overview of what they do and be available to interact with event attendees.

The current list of participating companies and institutions includes:

  1. Urthecast – providing live-streaming of the Earth from the International Space Station. ( http://www.urthecast.com)

  2. Ardusat – flying educational cubesats, students and teachers can design and conduct on-orbital space experiments with a host of exciting and accessible sensor packages. Two Ardusat space kits will be awarded to lucky Saturday participants. (https://www.ardusat.com/)

  3. SkyCorp – successful competitor in the 2013 NewSpace business plan competition; will showcase recent launch programs and their on-going efforts to reprocess and analyze the 1966-7 Lunar Orbiter data. (http://www.skycorpinc.com/)

  4. SpaceVR – developing an immersive 3D visualization based on image data from the International Space Station. (http://www.spacevr.co)

  5. Boreal Space – working on “solar sail” technology to use sunlight as ships use wind on the ocean; collaborator in NASA deep space missions. (http://www.borealspace.com)

  6. San Jose State University, Aerospace Engineering Dept. – collaborating with NASA Ames on small satellites, and educating the next generation of engineers in both aeronautics and space. (http://ae.sjsu.edu)

  7. And many, many more.

Please join us for a very exciting day at the San Francisco Innovation Hangar for great presentations and an incredible opportunity to meet the innovators who are bringing spaceflight to your neighborhoods and classrooms.

Silicon Valley Space Center (SVSC) helps innovative entrepreneurs in the commercialization of products or services in the rapidly growing NewSpace industry by integrating technology expertise, industry acumen, leveraged finance, and the educational leadership of Silicon Valley. (http://www.svsc.org).  Members – please use promo code “SVSCWINEZERO” for Friday.

The Innovation Hangar is a unique social innovation space that facilitates connections, ideas, and investments in a way that simply cannot happen in the virtual world. (http://ihangar.org/)

Openings are still available for Bay Area space entrepreneurs. Interested Bay Area groups should contact SVSC at: newspace@siliconvalleyspacecenter.org
