Recchiuti Confections Pear-Lime Pates de Fruits Confection w/ Triple Voodoo Phantom Empire Grissette

3. Drakes Beach Discovery Hike
10:00am – 4:00pm
Lovesick, battle-scarred bull elephant seals and the fossilized bones of whales that last swam 10 million years ago add to the rewards of this Valentine’s Day hike on one of the National Seashore’s most beautiful beaches. After a brief orientation at the newly opened Drakes Beach Café we’ll head down the beach for colorful maritime exploration history, marine ecology and fossil geology, we’ll take advantage of the falling tide to explore leisurely along a mile or two of broad, wind-sheltered beach at the base of dramatic white cliffs. Ocean currents and winter storms often bring beach combing treasures—both natural and human-made—to these sands, so we’ll look for curiosities that can connect us to fascinating stories (leaving, of course, anything we find–aside from trash–for others to discover). We’ll also keep our eyes peeled for whale fossils eroding from the cliffs while Frank’s spotting scope will allow “close-up” viewing (without disturbance) of the hauled-out elephant seals, shorebirds and other wildlife we’ll likely encounter.
Sunday, February 15
