Meet the Staff: Mike Gutierrez

In today’s Meet the Staff feature we meet The Job Shop’s newest recruiting associate, Mike Gutierrez! Mike has been with The Job Shop for for about 8 months now, and has brought us his vision and passion to help people find their dream jobs!

Q: Who are you, and how long have you been at the Job Shop?

A: My Name is Michael Gutierrez, originally from Sacramento. Graduated from SF State in Economics, and have now been a recruiter at The Job Shop for the past 8 months.

Q: What do you do at the Job Shop?

A: I do recruiting for both candidates and clients in the Bay Area. Whether a candidate needs help finding a job, or a client needs a candidate to hire, I help with the matching process.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job? What is the most rewarding aspect of it?

A: There are many aspects to the job that attract me to recruiting. Learning about other businesses, and what they need to sustain themselves efficiently through employment. And learning about what a candidate wants to do, from the various different backgrounds and transitions. Being able to identify and help both sides is both a learning and rewarding experience.

Q: What are some common mistakes candidates make?

A: There can be many mistakes that can make or break a candidate during interviews.

  1. The importance of dressing professionally for an interview should be taken seriously. Appearance can convey a number of things ranging from preparedness, to professionalism.

  2. Being too comfortable and thinking you got the job is another. Keep it professional from the beginning to the end.

  3. Being on time. Prepare for transportation and locations. Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to begin your job or your interview. Being on time is a great first impression.

Q: What do you think makes for an ideal candidate?

A: There are many qualities that make a great candidate.

Some traits that I find that can transition in mostly any work environment are:

  1. Communication

  2. Drive

  3. Can be coachable/ take feedback

  4. Work well with a team, but can be self accountable and get things done by themselves as well.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to people looking to work with The Job Shop, what would it be?

A: If you want to be proactive in your job search or candidate search, a business that has been around for 21 years is a great resource for both guidance, and of course finding results.

Q: What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies and interests?

A: Transitioning into my 30’s, it’s leisure hobbies. Hitting the gym is good meditation for me. Hiking around Ocean Beach is a fav of mine. And grabbing a good beverage or food with friends in the city. I love basketball, and occasionally catch a giants game when family or friends come in town.

Q: Do you have any interesting/funny anecdotes about your time at The Job Shop?

A: It’s never a dull moment at The Job Shop. Most recently I spilled a gift bag of Jelly Bean in the lobby floor of a client. That broke the Ice, or “jelly bean” once I met the client. It’s a fun and genuine environment, and the culture here reflex our relationships with our clients and candidates.

Q: Outside of work, what are you passionate about?

A: Helping out others, being positive, and finding a balance in life mentally and physically.

Q: What is one thing about you that might surprise people?

A: I’m Mexican. Lol!

Q: Anything else you’d like people to know?

A: I do Recruiting, spread the word!

Have a question for Mike, or anyone else on the staff? Leave it in the comments!
